phpBB2's "Retirement" Announced

Postby webmacster87 » 16 Apr 2008, 06:59

Well, today, the teams announced that phpBB2 will be retired beginning with the download links being removed in October and then support ending in January. Do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea? I'm kind of in a split opinion, myself. We'll be talking about this much more in-depth on phpBB Weekly this Saturday, but I'd be curious to see what your opinions are.

I'd figured this was going to happen soon once they removed the download link from the front page for phpBB2 Legacy...

I think it was inevitable and congratulate the phpBB team for giving users almost a years notice to get used to the ideal.

I know there are people that are very nostalgic about phpBB2 but with the announcement of the retirement of PHP4 I think this the right time to retire phpBB2.

I think that the reason they stated in the announcement is a good reason.
However I did not expect it so soon after releasing 2.0.23 - Why work on an update and soon after retire it

Perhaps they wanted people to be able to have a bugfixed 2.0.23 for those that want to stick around with it from here on out. Furthermore, they're still going to release security fixes as needed until the end of January.

Well, it?s not happened yet. The EOL is still 8 months away.
phpBB 2 revisions will be released as necessary from now until Feb 1, 2009.
These, and revision 23 were released as a Security Update, but also underscores why it needs to be retired. We need to concentrate all our effort on the future of phpBB, which includes 3.2
phpBB 2 at this point is a drain of resources that could be better focused on 3.0.x and 3.2.x

Topic Stickified. Announcements posted. -- See the update regarding MODs.
Watch out! I might do a code wheelie!

At least this topic won't go the way of the topic I posted on phpBB.com. I hate people that go on boards only to cause trouble. :banghead:

To be honest i do think its about time.
php4 has moved on to php5 mysql has gone from 4 to 5. So software is becoming more better, securer, faster and more reliable and to keep up with phpBB2 is just going to be like phpBB3 so instead of 2 versions it will just be the same.

I think people dont like moving to phpBB3 from phpBB2 is becasue the admin panel on BB3 is more complex and harder to learn although its just looking at where to go. Saying that i think if there was a mod or something for phpBB3 to make the Admin panel more like phpBB2 people would be alot happier with it. Although i wouldnt like to see the long list of links for items on the left.

but like buying a house or a car you learn from experiance, you look into how much you will benifit from it.
