StarTrekGuide Downtime... hacked?

Postby Handyman » 04 Jan 2011, 01:27

Hey Guys,

Just a quick note on what happened with StarTrekGuide on Sunday.
StarTrekGuide itself was not hacked (thankfully), however, somebody hacked into the server StarTrekGuide is hosted on, through one of the sites on the server, gained control of the server and uploaded a script that would replace all index files on the entire server, which unfortunately included StarTrekGuide, with the hacked message.
We spent most of the day looking through logs, then we reverted the index files throughout StarTrekGuide to get everything back up and running again, although some of you may have noticed, I missed the login template, so I fixed the login issue this morning.
Please contact me if you have any news to submit to SCOFF News.

Thanks for the update Handyman!

Glad it wasn't an issue with STG. :)

Luckily I was logged in elsewhere so I could still use the site while the login pages were missing! :P

Well, that kind of security (or rather, insecurity) is what you get when you buy shared hosting.

I agree. STG should pay $100/month for a dedicated server. :good:

Your sarcastic remark made in ignorance is duly noted.

I'm just going to assume you've not had any experience with a virtual private server, or server co-location.

Where can I get that?
It needs to be 4 core 2.8g per core, 2 250g hard drives, 8gig of ram, and 10tb of bandwidth on a Global 100mbs Network

I though STG was hosted on your own all singing and dancing Mac OS server in a co-lo?
