That planning is more important than actual coding.
That keeping in touch with all the devs and making sure everyone is on the same page is one of the most important things.
...well, those were the main things.
I believe we used SVN at the time, it is definitely something you will want to use for a group project (google hosts SVN to people for free, as does Sourceforge, but with Sourceforge you have to wait a few days to get the project approved).
